THUD - August 2024

Some lovely summer weather played host to the second THUD of the year on Friday 16th August. We were joined by some new attendees as well as some familiar faces. As before, after some networking, discussions and drinks, two young entrepreneurs presented to the captive audience.

Sammy of SG Hair and Beauty opened the event discussing her journey of creating and operating a family friendly salon from her home. Her next aspiration is to invest in training and equipment to provide hair extensions for those with weaker hair such as cancer patients. She was followed by Jamie of Edwards 3D Manufacturing who discussed his passion for 3D printing and how he wished to develop his product range, everything from shoes (a recent innovation of 3D printing) and prosthetics.

A new element of the evening was the introduction of the ‘Spot Pitch’ which was announced on the evening as Matt from Verve Vista, owner of a social media marketing agency who discussed how he helps business with their social media promotion and his dream of being self-employed at age just 17.

Attendees voted for their preferred pitch and the results were very close with 2nd place tied and just one vote separating the winner. Sammy and Jamie were awarded £300 to progress their business with winner Matt being awarded £400. Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner Cllr Leo Hammond joined us to present the awards.

THUD Re-Launch March 2024

On 22nd March we hosted THUD Yorkshire at Humber Street Gallery, catered by The Magic Basket Co.

The night began with networking, discussions, and drinks as we got to know one another and prepare for the evening ahead. Next, 3 young entrepreneurs pitched their businesses to a captive audience.

Dylan Whiting of LLM Services went first and explained the origins of his PAT testing business and where he wishes to go in the future. Then Ashleigh Ward of Ward Cosmetics told us all the small things she does to make her clients comfortable. Finally, Alfie Murrell of SYM Resale talked about the environmental impact of fast fashion and how he wishes to combat it by selling refurbished clothing. Each pitch had something different and plenty of people were engaged.  After food, more drinks, voting for a favourite pitch, and discussions, we heard from our guest speaker Ian Cass of the MicroBiz alliance- sponsors of the event, who advocates for micro businesses and pay in 30 days.

The overall winner of the business pitch was voted for by the attendees, and Alfie with his SYM Resale came out on top, winning a prize of £500 towards his business venture.
